As new and up-and-coming designers prepare to
showcase their art at the season 2 of the Nigerian Student Fashion and
Design Week (NSFDW) scheduled to hold on the 5th and 6th of June 2014 at
the University of Lagos, Student Pulse brings you 5 of the best talents
to watch out for.
1. Name: Kehinde OluwaDunsin Brand Name: Mistress_Lagos
Kehinde
as student of Babcock University is from a family of 5, one brother and
one sister. She’s been in the fashion industry for about 3 years.
“I
chose Fashion because it has been something I've always been good at
and God has given me the gift of creativity and style. I also discovered
that I enjoy being involved with things like designing, styling etc,”
she says.
“I hope to reach the feminine market and make clothes that'll inspire young people."
2. Name: Omirin Oluwatunmise Brand name: Sway Stitches
Oluwatunmise
was born and bred in Lagos and is the only girl in a family of 6. She
has an interesting fashion history and believed that “being naked is not
fashion” and says her designs are inspired by God, life, nature, colors
and art.
“I believe in decency... I'm walking
into the fashion industry with my eyes wide open, I know what I am
walking into and I intend to make a difference even if I'm starting
small,” Oluwatumise said.
Her greatest challenge is stingy customers.
3. Name: Abimbola Akomolafe Brand name: Fortunita Fashion
Abimbola
is an upcoming designer from OSC. She attended studied Estate
Management at OAU Ile-Ife and has nine years experience in the Banking
Industry. She is married with two children.
“I
discovered that I had an interest in designing and sewing, more as a
hobby than a job. Nevertheless I decided to go for more training when I
made some clothes for my children which people did not believe were not
ready-made. This encouraged me to go for further training” Abimbola
said.
Her major challenge is securing a start-up capital and a good location to attract the right kind of clientele.
4. Name: Alice Lolo Awobite Brand Name: Alacouture & Fashion House
Alice
is the first child in a family of 6, a Christian and an indigene of
Buguma, Rivers state studies at the University of Ibadan.
“I've
always had interest in fashionable items. I discovered my love for
designing when I started designing readymade shoes and bags. So I said
to myself: “If you can design other people's brand then you can create
and design yours.””
Alice is inspired by God and things around her and she hopes to make her brand is known all over the world.
Power
supply, funds, imitation and general brand acceptance and the fact that
people think ‘Made in Nigeria’ products aren't authentic are her main
concerns.
5. Name: Oladipupo Ololade Brand Name: Lah'delle
Ololade is the second child from a family of six and a graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University.
“Fashion
is my passion. I dream, live and breathe fashion. Immediately after
school, I decided to focus more on my passion which is designing. I
never felt like I had a choice because it just seemed natural to want to
translate my ideas into fashion,” Ololade enthused.
She is inspired by nature, art, culture and people and thinks each of her designs “is a work of art.”
When asked about her challenges she said, “Like most emerging designers, the challenge is financing your dream.”
